Treating Worn Dentition

Treating Worn Dentition from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Robert C. Margeas, DDS; and John Derango, DDS
When patients present to the office with an extensively worn dentition, the dentist must have an understanding of what is causing the wear in order to initiate successful treatment. Tooth wear can be caused by a number of factors, but usually one factor predominates. Communication between the dentist and the patient is essential in establishing an etiology of the wear. Usually, patients are aware of a problem and must be informed on how to prevent further damage and what treatment options are available. This article will review the etiology of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and a conservative, esthetic treatment solution.

The Art and Science of Effective Communication for Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment

Faculty: Karen Davis, RDH, BSDH

Free 1CE credit hour

Ineffective communication skills, rushed appointments and/or fear of what the patient may think when presenting a periodontal diagnosis are some of the common barriers that interfere with existing patients being enrolled into non-surgical treatment in the general dental practice. What do you say to a long term patient that has periodontal disease, but it unsuspecting? This course offers solutions for the entire team to create value for periodontal treatment; manage common patient objections; and move a patient from routine prophylaxis into necessary non-surgical treatment inclusive of locally applied antimicrobials, as indicated, and on-going periodontal maintenance.

Color Science and Shade Matching in Direct Composite Restorations
by Chad J. Anderson, DMD, MS and Gerard Kugel, DMD, MS, PhD

Color matching of direct composite restorations is often a frustrating and overlooked step for many practitioners due to the lack of education in the physical properties of current restorative composites in their armamentarium. Many practitioners also lack the elemental understanding underlying the science of human color perception. There are numerous steps that can be implemented to achieve a desired color match; these small but important steps can assure the practitioner and patient will be happy with their desired outcome.

Single-Tooth Replacement in the Esthetic Zone: Treatment Outcome Perspective
by Aldo Leopardi, DDS, MS

When a patient is faced with replacing a missing anterior tooth, the available treatment options include: a removable partial denture (acrylic or cast metal-based); resin-bonded fixed partial denture (Maryland Bridge), either cantilever or end-abutment, conventional, full-coverage, fixed partial denture, or a crown supported by a single implant. The patient’s decision process may be driven by several factors, with convenience and cost/insurance coverage possibly playing a significant role. However, if the clinician and patient have a clearer understanding of the treatment outcomes for each available treatment modality, once a decision is made, treatment outcomes and expectations may be better realized for those involved.
